Ten years ago, Annamaria and Alicia walked into CHOC Foundation on the very same day—unaware they were beginning a remarkable shared journey. What started as two new colleagues seated just a few chairs apart during orientation has grown into a decade-long partnership defined by heart, purpose, and a deep commitment to CHOC’s mission.
Over the past 10 years, Annamaria and Alicia have played integral roles in strengthening annual giving and stewardship efforts. Through thoughtful program building, meaningful donor engagement, and a focus on authentic relationships, they have helped ensure supporters feel closely connected to the impact they make for patients and families. Their work reflects not only professional excellence but also a genuine compassion for the community we serve.
Together, they embody collaborative leadership. Individually, they bring curiosity, empathy, and dedication to their roles. As partners, they elevate one another—and those around them—creating a positive and supportive environment within the Annual Giving team. Their shared passion, mutual respect, and even their shared love of cheese have made them not only trusted colleagues but dear friends.
The Foundation is incredibly grateful for Annamaria and Alicia’s dedication, their generous spirit, and the impact they have helped create over the past decade. As we honor this significant milestone, we had the opportunity to sit down with them for a Q&A to reflect on their decade-long defense of childhood.
What initially drew you to this work, and what continues to inspire you today?
Annamaria Ahern (AA): I was drawn to CHOC by the opportunity to build programs that directly support the health and well-being of children and their families. Each day, I’m inspired by the patients, families, and associates I have the privilege of working alongside, and by the way philanthropy drives meaningful, lasting impact in the community we serve.
Alicia Balderas (AB): I didn’t initially know about CHOC, but a recruiter encouraged me to explore an opportunity to support its mission—and once I did, I was all in. What stood out then, and still inspires me today, is CHOC’s commitment to both clinical excellence and compassionate care, especially for families navigating difficult moments. As a parent, I recognize it as the kind of pediatric healthcare system I was looking for when my kids were young, and that perspective deepens my desire to help ensure all families have access to that same level of care and support. It’s meaningful to be part of an organization that serves patients and families so holistically.
Looking back over the last 10 years, what accomplishment or project are you most proud of?
AA: I’m most proud of building fundraising programs that strengthen donor support while thoughtfully stewarding individuals throughout their giving journey. Helping donors understand where and how they can make a difference—and ensuring they feel recognized and appreciated—has been especially meaningful, as it translates into real impact for patients and families. It’s also been rewarding to see this work recognized both within the organization and across the philanthropy community. Ultimately, it’s the relationships built along the way that make this work so impactful.
AB: I’m most proud of helping build our donor engagement and stewardship efforts over the past decade. By building strong relationships and supporting the development of programs from the ground up, my team has created more meaningful connections with donors at every level. Being part of that evolution has been incredibly rewarding.
How has your role evolved over time, and what have you learned along the way?
AA: My role has evolved alongside the growth of our programs, expanding to include broader collaboration, strategic oversight, and the ability to step into new opportunities as they emerge. Along the way, I’ve learned the importance of listening, staying open to new ideas, and balancing innovation with thoughtful execution to drive meaningful, lasting results.
What do you enjoy most about working with your colleagues, volunteers, or donor community?
AA: I enjoy connecting with people and building authentic relationships, learning what matters most to them, and collaborating toward shared goals. A key part of that is aligning their passions with meaningful opportunities to support our mission, whether through their work or philanthropy. Seeing the impact we create together is what makes these moments so meaningful.
AB: I most enjoy the camaraderie and shared purpose of our mission. There’s something really special about working alongside colleagues, volunteers, and donors who are all deeply committed to making a difference for children and families. It makes the work feel both personal and impactful.
What advice would you share with someone beginning their career in philanthropy or nonprofit leadership?
AA: Philanthropy offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Stay curious, build authentic relationships, and always keep the mission at the center of your work; these principles will help guide you to a rewarding and impactful career.
AB: I would encourage them to stay grounded in the mission and to lead with curiosity and compassion. Take the time to listen and build genuine relationships—this work is so much about trust and understanding what matters most to others. Be patient with yourself as you learn, and remember that even brief moments of connection can lead to meaningful impact over time.
What are you looking forward to in the next chapter of your work here?
AA: I’m looking forward to continuing to grow programs, expand donor support, and mentor colleagues while building and strengthening relationships along the way. Ensuring our work has a lasting impact on patients, families, and the community remains central to my role and something I care deeply about.
AB: I’m looking forward to CHOC’s continued growth as more patient and family needs are met through new treatments, research, and community programs. I’m especially excited about connecting those opportunities to our donors’ passions and interests, helping them see the impact of their support and deepening their engagement with our mission.
Join us in celebrating Annamaria and Alicia’s 10-year work anniversary with the CHOC Foundation. We appreciate their outstanding contributions and the valuable partnerships they continue to build for the future.
