CHOC Foundation 2018-2019 Philanthropic Annual Report
This year, our community of supporters created incredible change on behalf of the patients and families we are privileged to serve at CHOC. Below, we celebrate our donors and share their heartfelt stories of giving.
Your Heart, Their Healing.
A MESSAGE FROM DOUG CORBIN, SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT & CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
The hallmark of CHOC donors is their deep love for children. It is the thread that holds us all together, whether you’re a parent, grandparent, aunt or uncle. In my life, I’m most proud of being a father and the fact that I have, and always will, place my children first. I know that the parents in our community likewise place their children first and would do anything to ensure their well-being. That’s what makes our community so special and as united as any in the region.
Our donors are absolutely vital to our children’s healing because a number of programs at CHOC would be unsustainable without philanthropy. Insurance simply does not cover the many family-centered services that help children heal. However, by coming together as a philanthropic community, the good that we can do is unlimited.
There are those who go through life and never find a sense of purpose. But our donors connect to a broader meaning and inner peace because they see how their generosity changes the lives of our patients. I believe, and I know our donors believe, that CHOC is one of the most valuable resources in our community. Our long-term goal is to be the destination children’s hospital in the United States. Thanks to our donors, I have no doubt that we will achieve this goal.
Thank you for choosing CHOC and trusting us with your gifts. We are humbled and eternally grateful for your valued support.
Annette & Richard Symons
“We don’t think there is any greater feeling than being able to help children.”
Bill & Nancy Thompson
“CHOC, without question, leads the way for children’s health. That, to me, is the most powerful element of our partnership.”
The Gross Family Foundation
“CHOC changes many lives every day and is truly a world-class children’s hospital.”
A Heart for their Community
With three healthy children, Vivien and Daniel Hyman never had cause to visit CHOC. As such, they did not realize how CHOC impacted the community they cherished until Dan was invited to join the Foundation board. “We didn’t comprehend what some families go through,” Vivien says. “There are so many families that need and deserve care. And that’s what CHOC does so well.” When they saw how well the children in their community were cared for, the Hymans immediately recognized how their values integrated with CHOC’s.
Involving the Whole Family
The Hymans have become dedicated collaborators, supporters and champions for CHOC. Vivien volunteers on the CHOC Gala Committee, and Dan serves as vice chair of the CHOC Foundation’s board of directors. Even their daughter Victoria has gotten involved. For her fifth birthday, she donated all her presents to children at CHOC. Together, their efforts have inspired countless community members to join the CHOC family. “We now understand just how important CHOC is to our community,” Vivien says, “and how fortunate we are to be able to rely on CHOC in times of need. We want CHOC to be here forever.”
As part of this commitment, last year the Hymans supported CHOC with a $2 million gift, naming a pod in the mental health inpatient center. The Hymans are grateful to help fill a glaring gap in care and to advocate for a topic that continues to carry a stigma. Vivien is hopeful about the future of mental health: “Families are beginning to see how critical mental health care is to our children’s overall well-being and their ability to thrive.”
What Matters Most
Ultimately, the Hyman family’s efforts and generosity go directly toward what matters most to them: their community. “We want young people growing up mentally healthy as well as physically healthy,” Vivien says, “because they’re the ones who are going to be leading our community in the future.”
She continues: “Hearing families tell their stories and seeing them thrive is why we are passionate about supporting CHOC and why we will never stop doing so.”
CHOC’s excellence means that more families are coming to CHOC from outside of the county, state and even country. With philanthropic support, we are able to turn a scary hospital visit into a positive experience for a growing number of children each year.
When a condition develops to the point where surgical intervention is required, CHOC has the technology and expertise to ensure the lowest amount of pain, recovery time and risk for our young patients.
At CHOC, no child is ever turned away, and we strive to ensure families can focus on their child’s health instead of worrying about finances. As a nonprofit dedicated to the well-being of children, we place healing above the bottom line.
The goal of research at CHOC is to create tomorrow’s healing today. Our scientists translate the latest advances, including whole genome sequencing, to give families hope and to save young lives.
CHOC was honored once again in 2019 for its commitment to the highest standards of care, safety and service. We are focused on further elevating our level of care so we can preserve the magic of childhood for even more children.
Our pet therapy program is a volunteer service that puts countless smiles on the faces of our patients and families. Our dogs live to make children feel better, and we have two more canine cadets currently in training!
When a child faces serious illness or injury, quick transportation can mean the difference between life and death. That’s why CHOC is the only hospital in Southern California with an on-site helicopter, allowing us to respond immediately to emergencies.
The defeat of cancer deserves to be celebrated. When a patient has their last chemotherapy treatment, our oncology team throws them a party they will remember forever.
